ok, ok Color Me Badd were heavily influenced by the 80's...just look at their hair-dos.

But, I would say that even though rock turned into grunge and hip hop into gangsta glam, that undercurrent was still there in the 80's (iron maiden, judas priest, metallica, slayer. megadeth etc.)

It just depends on where you look. Pop and dance music has a lot of inherent happiness (amidst everything else)...
