MessageGreat post
For further insight into the big dipper/great bear you might want to try out this link to the page of the eldest son

Its a superb web site and goes into detail on the original Yu the great - who seems to have been a Bear shaman/chieftain who carried out the original pace in the form of a Bear - the eldest son (Chen). His descendant was Yu the emperor (Yu seems to have been a title or hereditary name like Arthur ( thunder bear ) which is also a name for the Big Dipper - Arthurs Wain, the Celtic Solstice - Alban Arthuan). This later Yu seems to have carried out a more elaborate form of the ritual, which perhaps reflects the transition from shamanism to mountain Taoism to temple Taoism.
I have always been drawn to the Bear (especially Polar Bears keep cropping up synchronistically) and was told once by an acupressurist that I have a very strong kidney energy so I think there is a definite affinity there. This is probably why I love Christmas/Winter solstice so much, Bears have been associated with this festival since the Dawn of times, even the Neanderthals seemed to have worshipped/attuned to them.
At the Solstice,I especially love practising the five animals with extra emphasis on the Bear along with Primordial Tai Chi (which is also associated with the pole star I believe).
