What is the connection between pain and enlightenment?

How neccessary an ingredient? For some people the pain of losing a loved one has acted as an ultimate wake up call. Others have found enlighenment only in their darkest near suicidal hour.

And am I thinking of a 'head first' enlightenment where the mind clashes against itself, ripping the ego to shreds. Is the Taoist way 'body first' increased energy ripping through the body's circuits returning it back to its original state?
