MessageIn part, due to John Chang's own admission as discussed in the book.
In his system, you progress through certain "levels".
"Level 1" of his system seems pretty harmless enough; basically
you just spend a year or so meditating on your dantian . . .
BUT, according to John Chang's own words about when you progress
from Level 3 to Level 4, the meditation is supposedly extremely
and excruciatingly painful to your body, and that it is not
something that everyone can endure. It is this transition that is
purported to allow the practitioner to emit the powerful "qi lightning".
Also, I have heard (rumored, unverified) that a number of his students,
including the author of the book, have developed cancer,
possibly as the result of doing these extreme practices.
This latter bit I haven't personally verified, but coupled with
John Chang's own admission about the stress that the system puts the
body under, it makes me feel the system may not be wise (personal opinion).
