MessageHello Steven:
Life is diverse, life is dynamic, life is changing. How can we live in this diverse, dynamic and changing world? How can we stop from living in the past, attached to the past, trapped in old thoughts, living from our ego and past patterns?
Its my experience taoist practices are about guiding us to live in the moment, with an open mind, an empty mind to allow us to observe and live life in a natural way.
Steven says:
"However, nonetheless the smaller self is alive here in this mortal
realm. There may be some inherent value in its being as well.
It may well be that it helps to provide the vehicle for learning, i.e.
the problems and troubles etc. provide a uniquely pleasurable learning
experience that can not be had by eliminating the rough. I.E. You
are taking away some of the fun and flavor, and maybe streamlining
things to sterility. Thus there may be some value in keeping
distinct multi-layers."

I believe when we are able to live from an open, free space we have lots of fun, we play, we dance, we engage in life in a wonderful way. Im not sure why my writing would lead someone to view things as sterile, quite the contrary there is a fascination in being alive, and being spontaneous.
We always have multiple layers, but we know which ones are just playthings and do not allow them to traumatize us, cripple us, keep us trapped in old patterns, dreams, fears.
Steven:
Perfected diamonds bore me; Jagged uncut, impure stones are far
more interesting. What say you?"

Just as the Tao Te Ching says, just do not make distinctions, good-bad, left-right, immortal-non-immortal, etc.
I never mention a perfect diamond, its an analogy that you are already what you seek. Alchemy has the potential that can allow us to experience this and begin to identify all the multi-layers of our life and not get trapped in the pain and suffering that can result from viewing them as our essential nature. We don't grant them importance, we see them as things that come and go, a true understanding of the nature of change.
Being able to live from our Yuan Shen allows us to perceive the nature of our thoughts, emotions, fantasies and dreams, to see them as they are and not give them more meaning then their nature. Alchemy is about this too.
All I am expressing is to focus on your direct experience, not your thoughts, dreams, fantasies or desires, but what you experience right now, and do this over and over until this becomes your daily reality, not living in the past or the future. Its that simple, and you will be freed from the things that keep you from the here and now and our dynamic and magnificent life that has always been here. This is free will, the freedom to live in the here and now, to live from your true nature where anything is possible because in this space there is ego creating limits.
Wishing you the best in your journey to yourself.
Smiling in the tao,
bagua
