MessageI'm reminded of a story of the 5 or 6th patriarch of a major zen school. There was a contest to see who would be the schools successor. They decided on a contest of enlightened poetry.
The top men wrote poems and displayed them on the temple wall. The leading contender was titled, 'Be Like the Hand Pointing the Moon'. It was in close competition with a poem entitled, 'Be Like the Moon reflecting on the Pond'.
On the morning of the final decision, someone had written under them, there is no hand, there is no pond, there is no moon. The current patriarch asked who wrote that. The cook came forward, and was named the 6th patriarch.
Ofcourse the wind up is that the cook had to be sent away to avoid being assasinated by some of the older irate abbots.
What does this mean? I don't really know. Maybe don't get caught up in forms, and a cranky monk as likely to knife you in the back as the next man.
