MessageWhile there was a Buddhist sect in Japan that drank lacquer and arsenic, lacquer ingestion was unique to them.
Normally, the jungles are good for getting enlightened, while the desert is good for transforming the body.
My guess is that the preservation can be attributed to arsenic ingestion. There is nothing to eat the body then--although I don't want to detract from the cultivation efforts of these monks, as a body that does not rot is a sign of a certain stage of attainment.
Either way, it is still just a corpse. :)
