MessageHi Simon,
I'm always putting my foot in it. Recently I had some messages deleted from a buddhist forum by the moderators.
I think the Dalai Lama pitches himself to the general level of his audience both specialist and non-specialist and as the occasion suits. What I find remarkable about him doctrinely is that he's an exponent of the Rime tradition giving and receiving teachings from all the different lineages. He practices dzogchen which is not officially recognised by the Gelupas.
I'm not sure if has assimilated western popular culture, he certainly hasn't had the opportunity to live, teach and work in the west as other exiles have, but I think he has assimilated other aspects like science - actually that's all I can think of though I'm not really qualified to be his biographer ...
I'll give the book a try anyway, despite the reviews, as these are usually done by buddhist practitioners who may feel honour bound to give good reviews.
Best,
Rex
